AAR Operation: SELF DESTRUCT in Redding/Misfits on April 14th, 2013

AAR Operation SELF DESTRUCT in Redding April 14th, 2013

On April 14th, 2013 the Misfits held Operation: SELF DESTRUCT at their field in Redding.  This post is to report what went well, and what didn't, so that we might learn and become better solders for our battles to come. May we have many more opportunities to improve.

Attendance: The most current report was that more than 90 operators attended.  Five teams of roughly 10 operators each who were experienced, Mil-Sim, and another 40+ of general public.

Diamond Corps (16): Blazed, Mouse, Logan, Kalish, Kattiana, Bill, Jensen, Bluewolf, Duck, Laura, Farside, Tank, Squirrel, and Squirrel Boy, Zane, and Komissar.

Weather: The weather was clear and comfortable (74 degrees), no wind.

Terrain: Their field (reported 200 acres) resembles ours with Oak trees, Manzanita brush, dense and open areas, and similar changes in elevation. No structures.

Rules: Their field rules are very similar to ours with some exceptions: ‘Bang’ kills are at 25’ engagement distance, and gun hits don’t count. The respawn rules for this OP varied per team but in general, when hit you fell in place using Red Rag, and were down for three minutes. After three minutes you returned to your team. Medic Rules: If you could get to a down operator before three minutes, you touch them and count ten seconds to respawn with no further wait.

Team Prep: The DC had several operators who wanted to attend this event, but were obligated elsewhere. Last minute changes made organization and carpool arrangements awkward. It was the first away event for several DC operators; however they arrived well prepared for which all operators are to be commended. This dedication speaks volumes about our organization and the people who are a part of it!

Warm-up: A typical safety briefing was held followed by a force on force held near the center of the field. Even once we were on the field the DC was still not organized, and we never ever heard the call for the game to begin. Enemy poured over a hill at 100 feet distance and began killing our team as we were talking in a group. After respawning into two mismatched groups, we pushed the enemy back over the hill. Nothing exciting. Just a ‘warm-up’. It was difficult to tell who were enemy and who were friendly, as there was no distinction as to the forces. It became kill first, and medic those who were friendly fired. Great plan huh?

The OP: The OP began with some briefing and redundant re-briefing, Diamond Corps was split into two teams of eight. These Northern and Southern forces each was to be led by a small team from the Misfits who knew the area. Each force had two Engineers who the enemy would attempt to capture and escort to the center of the field where they would be ‘executed’ if held 20 minutes without rescue. After each force located its objective the Engineer would take control of the package. The Engineer would then be escorted to a location on the field and hold there for 20 minutes for victory.

The Forest: At the start we followed our guide at a full run to the area where we were to locate our objective. We found a white bucket, and then a pile of rocks with a stick placed standing upright. We were told these were not the target. Our target was a satellite dish painted in camo. Our three guides were disappointed, but assured us the target was nearby.

Enemy was sighted in small numbers at first, reported by our DC rear security. We were assured the target was nearby. Bad intel. We continued our search defending our DC Engineer. One of our guides was the second Engineer. The enemy force grew, and DC kept up the reports to the guides.  We continued to search wary of the enemy forces growing nearby.

It became apparent we weren’t leaving, so I made the decision and DC formed up readying for the engagement.  The enemy attacked. Both DC and enemy bodies were everywhere mixed in the heavy brush and trees, with troops on both sides trying to ‘medic’ their forces. Just as it looked as though we were about to be overrun, our Northern DC force arrived and destroyed the enemy. With all of DC together again we moved out of the area led by our guides.

It wasn’t long before we were attacked again, and this time by the entire opposing force. During this fight three of the four Engineers were captured. The DC guards defended our remaining Engineer, nearly losing her in this battle. Wounded but not captured DC again brought the last Engineer to safety and respawn.

Dam: (Or, what do you mean we left our people behind): Once again we followed down a road through the woods. Miraculously our Engineer had found the required package and we were now escorting her to the Dam where she would complete the mission. My fire-team at the rear of our formation moved like veteran operators! We were finally working together, and things were moving smoothly.

The Dam was located, and a perimeter was set. Our Engineer went to work. The report that enemy was approaching came in, and the troops began fire and fall back to slow their advance.

Just as the enemy hoards began pouring over the hill the guides reported that we needed to exfil down a road away from the enemy. We performed a determined fire and fall back leaving the Dam to the approaching enemy. Several of our fallen comrades were recovered using the medic rule during this constant exchange with the growing number of attackers. The team was working well.

After falling back a hundred yards or so one of the DC reported that they were missing the Engineer and her guard. They had been left on the Dam! The leadership encouraged us to continue to move to the extraction point. The DC grouped and waded into the enemy who had overrun the Dam. The Engineer, her DC guard and one of the Misfits had been left behind when the exfil order was given. They were all ‘wounded’, (can’t move or shoot for three minutes unless medic’ed by a fellow teammate). Under heavy fire, the DC team medic’ed and recovered all three of those who had been left behind!

The Creek Crossing: Our team again performed a fire and fall back until it regrouped with the rest of our forces. Operators were constantly using the medic rule to get their fallen brothers back on their feet. At one point I stopped my ‘medic count’ to respawn a fallen operator. While continuing to fire, I glanced at his face and recognized him as an enemy who had shot me earlier. I asked him, “Aren’t you the enemy? Where is your armband?” He responded,” Uuuuuuuuhhhhh, . . . I lost it somewhere”. I left him to ‘bleed out’.

Once arriving at the River Crossing exfil point, we held our position until OPCOM declared we had succeeded. A rough fought victory.

Lunch: The Misfits hosted an incredible BBQ! Despite over 90 operators attending they provided a two hotdog, chips and a drink lunch for every person. And they did this for $5 a head! Several of the Misfit’s team hung out with the DC and discussed all things Airsoft.

After a comfortable break they began the last mission of the day.

The Bunker: Our forces were to move quickly down a road and locate a satchel. Once located, the satchel was to be moved to the Bunker location and defended. The road ran through a heavy wooded area, and the Bunker was in a large open area to the Northwest. A DC quick-reaction force was assembled along with a few of the Misfits fastest runners. At the call, the whole team moved to engage the enemy. We ran into tough resistance once the road entered the woods. Despite our effort, the satchel was recovered by the opposing forces. Bad intel.

Knowing that the enemy was now trying to move the satchel to the bunker for victory, the DC formed a strong, wide perimeter around the open area known as the bunker. Several engagements and fun fire-fights went on during this evolution of the mission. The DC team was working better with each new challenge. It wasn’t long and we heard the signal confirming that the enemy had completed the objective. But the open area had not been breached. Defenders still concealed themselves all around the perimeter holding the line. How could this be?

The location we, (including several of our Misfit allies), had been defending during this time, was not the location needed for the enemy victory. Again, bad intel.

Overview: All in all, a good day. It got better with each engagement, as the DC team worked together to defend and maneuver and defeat our opponents. This was the real victory earned this day. DC is beginning to bond as a team again. We are learning about our strengths and weaknesses. It is getting smoother. And this is just the first!

The Misfits: It is a pleasure to finally find a group who has the same or similar interests as our team. Although they have some experienced operators, they are new to running OP’s. They have been working on making their field safe for the ‘Hoard’s of general public that attend. I would like to see DC and the Misfits work together (or opposed) on a Mil-Sim field, without the general public in attendance. It just so happens both teams can accommodate this and have similar ideas.

These are fun, honest operators who like competitive, Mil-Sim style Airsoft. It’s nice to know there are more out there! And their field is incredible too.

Great review!   We certainly did have our fair share of bad intel.  It really made the game an uphill battle!

It was great to have you guys and we look forward to many more events with you guys in the future!
