BATTLEGROUND

Airsoft in the YubaCity / Marysville area.

Vietnam themed Mil-Sim OP.

Some of the information below has been repeated from the EVENT page.

Briefing: January 10, 1969

As of late, US Marine infantry units in the north have been tied to their combat bases as part of the McNamara Line. This "line" was a combination of infantry units and fire bases devised to stop the North Vietnamese infiltration into South Vietnam along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. General Davis has taken command of the 3rd Marine Division. He has ordered his Marine units to move out of their combat bases and engage the enemy. He has noted that the manning of the bases and the defensive posture they developed was contrary to the aggressive style of fighting that Marines favor. Intelligence reports indicated that there has been a large build-up of enemy in the A Shau Valley. Based on this intelligence, Colonel Barrow’s 9th Marine Regiment has been  ordered to depart Vandergriff Combat Base and sweep west to deny use of the valley to the enemy.

Operation Dewey Canyon is divided into three parts: 1) The movement and positioning of air assets, 2) The movement of the 9th Marines south out of their combat base, and 3) The sweep of the A Shau valley. As the 9th Marines move towards the A Shau valley, they will established numerous firebases along the way which will provide them artillery support upon entering the valley and guard their main supply route. All of these bases needed to be resupplied by helicopter because of their distance from the main combat base and because resupply via ground can be very difficult during monsoon season.

The A Shau Valley

35 miles of land in the extreme western frontier of the Thua Thien Province stretching from the village of A Shau on the South to the Elephant Valley in the North along the Laotian border. Major NVA infiltration route and NVA base Area 611. The valley has become a nightmare for the troops who established bases there. Though numerous ops have been mounted in the valley, complete control has never been relinquished by enemy forces. Allied ops are normally suspended during the fall due to monsoons and the great difficulty of resupply/support of troops. For two years, the valley has belonged to the enemy. Running the length of the valley, was the enemy built Rte 548, which was carrying tons of enemy supplies to staging areas to support operations against Hue and Da Nang. This enemy infiltration has gone unhindered.

Now you have just 9 days and a wake up!

-( In Mar 69, 2nd Bde entered for 3 separate ops over a 167 day period that were known overall as Kentucky Jumper. Unlike many prior ops, the NVA stood its ground during Operation Kentucky Jumper, in battles such as "Bloody Ridge" (Dong A Tay). Infamous Hamburger Hill battle took place along west side of valley during Aug 69, with 101st pulling out on 11 Aug 69.

The Marines claimed the operation as an overall success, including the denial of the valley as an NVA staging area for future operations.)

What is an "Rte 548" ? A type of aircraft? I couldn't find anything on it.

Very nice background info though. It very much adds another dimension to the Op. Is this all historically accurate?

Marlfox: Try Google Maps. Could be a rotary wing (heh?). It's history with added input. Sort of like they teach in schools now days.
