SUMMARY:Cimmerian OP: Button Hook
DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by the Cimmerians.\nYou must be regis
tered on the Cimmerian site and be at least 18 years old.\n\nDATE: Nov
 ember 20th, 2010\n\n\nLOCATION: TBA\n\nGENRE: Viet Nam\n\nBRIEFING:\nT
he Battle of Ia Drang was one of the first major battles between the U
nited States Army and t North Vietnamese Army (NVA) during the Vietnam
War.\nThe two-part battle took place between November 14 and November
18, 1965, at two landing zones (LZs) northwest of Plei Me in the Cent
ral Highlands of South Vietnam (approximately 35 miles south-west of P
leiku). The battle derives its name from the Drang River which runs th
rough the valley northwest of Plei Me, in which the engagement took pl
ace. \"Ia\" means \"river\" in the local Montagnard language.\nThe U.S
. command saw this as an ideal area to test their newly developed air
mobility tactics. Air mobility called for battalion-sized forces to be
delivered into, supplied, and extracted from an area of action using
helicopters. Since heavy weapons of a normal combined-arms force could
not follow, the infantry would be supported by coordinated air, artil
lery, and aerial rocket fire arranged from a distance and directed by
local observers.\nRepresenting the American forces were elements of th
 e 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry, the 2nd Battalion, and the 5th Cavalry o
f the United States Army. The North Vietnamese forces included the 33r
d, 66th, and 320th Regiments of the NVA as well National Liberation Fr
ont (NLF) (known world wide as the VC) of the H15 Battalion. The battl
e featured close air support by U.S. bombers. Both sides suffered heav
y losses and both claimed victory.\n\n\n\nLOAD-OUT:\nYou will never be
turned away if you do not have authentic VN gear. We are trying to ma
ke it feel like you are in an actual combat zone in Vietnam. We ask th
at you strive to meet our load out requirements. The closer your can g
et to authentic VN impressions, the better the experience will be for
you and the other participants. If you do not have gear, no problem! W
e have had several inquiries from participants who want to come to the
OP but aren't sure they have an \"authentic uniform\". Uniform authen
ticity is not critical. Attitude is more important. Try your best. It
is easy to put together a uniform at little expense. Do your best, be
creative, and that will be fine.\n\nNAM photos from our site here.\n\n
