JAN 1994 - The First Battle of Grozny was the Russian Army's invasion and subsequent conquest of the Chechen capital, Grozny, during the early months of the First Chechen War. The attack lasted from December 1994 to March 1995. The initial assault resulted in very high federal casualties and an breakdown of morale in the Russian forces. Heavy usage of Spetznaz units broke the back of the Chechen forces. This Cimmerian OP will focus on a key battle for the Shushskaya power station. Initially occupied and systematically destroyed by a Chechen strike team and re-taken by Spetznaz. This key power station supplied Grozny with power. The Battle of Grozny caused enormous destruction and casualties amongst the civilian population and saw the heaviest bombing campaign in Europe since World War II.

As always we expect operators to do their best to wear a military uniform.

The Corps will be RUSSIAN:
Uniforms:
Russian: Woodland patterns, Russian camo, ACU
Chechen militia: OD, snow, mixed others

Operations on Snow: Be advised that this is a snow OP. Snow shoes are very helpful. Skiis are also useful.

Chow: There will be a communal boiling pot for your hot lunch.

Register: Send a registration email to register@cimmerians.net

This is an operation in snow. Snow shoes and waterproof clothing are highly recommended. We will have a significant amount of patrolling and movement to do on the snow. As many operators can attest, snowshoe are very useful.

Below is the Cimmerians "Snow Lessons", for insights into operations in Snow.

Snow Ops: Lessons Learned
Vehicles:
Each vehicle should have a good,
full-sized shovel, an ice scraper for the windows, and of course, be mechanically sound for cold weather.
Footwear:
I noticed that most operators made due wearing their combat boots. While their feet may not have stayed dry and warm, I believe more appropriate footwear would have specialty snow boots. They feature all rubber bottoms that have a super-wide footprint, which is more stable, sinks less with each step, and dryerfor walking in the snow. A few pairs of thick polypropylene socks are essential!
Clothing:
Simply stated, Goretex is the most essential item there is. Every operator without proper clothing became completely soaked, and at that point, misery becomes your playmate.
Long underwear should be worn and when used with the proper clothing on the outside is perfect.
Gloves:
Thin insulated gloves are recommended for during the OP, and a thicker pair for travel.
Polypropylene hat, pullovers and neck gaiter:
These are needed for warmth and insulation, both while operating and in camp. This miracle material is the best for warmth, even if you get damp or wet.
Snowshoes:
Snowshoes are an aid to combat ops in the snow. The newer style, aluminum framed devices are lightweight, easy to wear and use, are inexpensive, and allow the operator to enjoy much of his normal walking mobility- even in the deepest, freshest snow. On slopes and mixed terrain it's no problem- they provide excellent traction and stability. The advantage guys with snowshoes have over those without is; the operator who chooses to eschew this essential piece of equipment for snow ops is setting himself up to be floundering, slow-moving, self-actuated shooting target.

With a modest investment in the above-described equipment and clothing, operators can enjoy many years of comfortable operating in the snow.
