BRIEFING:
The Battle of Ia Drang was one of the first major battles between the United States Army and t North Vietnamese Army (NVA) during the Vietnam War.
The two-part battle took place between November 14 and November 18, 1965, at two landing zones (LZs) northwest of Plei Me in the Central Highlands of South Vietnam (approximately 35 miles south-west of Pleiku). The battle derives its name from the Drang River which runs through the valley northwest of Plei Me, in which the engagement took place. "Ia" means "river" in the local Montagnard language.
The U.S. command saw this as an ideal area to test their newly developed air mobility tactics. Air mobility called for battalion-sized forces to be delivered into, supplied, and extracted from an area of action using helicopters. Since heavy weapons of a normal combined-arms force could not follow, the infantry would be supported by coordinated air, artillery, and aerial rocket fire arranged from a distance and directed by local observers.
Representing the American forces were elements of the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry, the 2nd Battalion, and the 5th Cavalry of the United States Army. The North Vietnamese forces included the 33rd, 66th, and 320th Regiments of the NVA as well National Liberation Front (NLF) (known world wide as the VC) of the H15 Battalion. The battle featured close air support by U.S. bombers. Both sides suffered heavy losses and both claimed victory.

LOAD-OUT:
You will never be turned away if you do not have authentic VN gear. We are trying to make it feel like you are in an actual combat zone in Vietnam. We ask that you strive to meet our load out requirements. The closer your can get to authentic VN impressions, the better the experience will be for you and the other participants. If you do not have gear, no problem! We have had several inquiries from participants who want to come to the OP but aren't sure they have an "authentic uniform". Uniform authenticity is not critical. Attitude is more important. Try your best. It is easy to put together a uniform at little expense. Do your best, be creative, and that will be fine.
